Welcome To Our Worship Assembly!

When you visit with us at Laurel, we want you to feel comfortable. So, in case you’re not familiar with the practices of the Churches of Christ, here is a brief description of our service:

SINGING PRAISE to God in an a cappella (voices only) style is a cherished part of our worship.

PRAYERS are offered to communicate to God our shared praise and petitions.

COMMUNION or LORD’S SUPPER celebrates Jesus’ death that brings us salvation and forgiveness of sins.  It also helps us remember His resurrection from the dead.  This is what gives us the assurance of living with God forever. We celebrate this event and the unity we share in Christ by eating the Lord’s Supper, or Communion, together each Sunday morning. The unleavened bread (or cracker) is a reminder of his body on the cross.  While the cup (grape juice) is a reminder of his blood that was shed for us. All Christians are invited to join us in this communion celebration feast.

FINANCIAL OFFERINGS are given to God as a means of supporting our ministries. Baskets are passed for this collection on Sunday morning. Members are encouraged to give of their financial means on a regular basis.  However, visitors are not obligated to contribute.

PREACHING is a means of worshipping together and brings us insight and encouragement from God’s word.

INVITATION is extended at the end of the sermon. During the “invitation song,” anyone with a spiritual need may walk to the front of the auditorium and talk with the minister. Some publicly confess Jesus as Lord and are baptized (immersed) in water to become a Christian. Some request prayers for a special need or crisis. Others ask Christians to join them in praise to God because of a remarkable blessing. Please be aware that this is not the only means of responding. You may talk privately with one of our ministers, elders or members at any time.

 Who Are We, Really ?

Unity in diversity...

As a congregation of more than 500 members, Laurel is incredibly diverse. We live in all parts of six counties surrounding Knoxville, including cities, suburbs and the countryside. Our members' jobs represent a cross section of jobs in the area, including professionals, industrial workers  and laborers. Our university connection provides more than average turnover as students come and go in their pursuit of higher education. People move in from all parts of the country, bringing with them certain expectations and preferences for church life. We pray for God's guidance as we honor this cultural diversity. We  consider it a strength that helps us center on the person and mission of Jesus as the source of our unity.
